All grew to fear the Chime, the crystal-clear sound reverbrating through the cells, for none knew when it would be their time, their time to be called into the Sphere.
As the name suggested, the Sphere was a large ball, a perfect sphere of empty space encapsulated in shimmering crystal. Within the Sphere, reality reshaped itself to the will of those strong enough to seize it, but nothing could penetrate the Sphere itself.
If one could see it from the outside, the Sphere would look like a cluster of spines, for the outer surface of the Sphere was covered in cells, each barely large enough for their captives, some humanoid, some not.
When the Chime rang, two or more cells would open, expelling their captives into the Sphere. Sometimes, the 'freed' captives would have to fight each other; other times, new adversaries would appear in the center, and the captives would have to fight against them.
And now... it is time once more, as the Chime rings out...
***
From one end of the Sphere, a cell slides open, releasing a a confused lizardman. The reptile spirals aimlessly, a crystal axe clutched in its hand, as a cell opens elsewhere in the Sphere, ejecting a small, blue-skinned goblin. The new creature immediately begins running, grassy ground forming under its little feet and disappearing as it runs in a big loop *under* the lizardman. The bigger creature tries to peer down, but by this time the strange goblin has run up behind it. It grins weirdly, its mouth opening impossibly wide, and bites down, snapping through the lizardman's neck. The image of the lizardman fragments and disappears, as though it were nothing but an illusion, but the blood on the goblin's teeth disproves this comforting lie.
The chime rings once more, and two more cells open...
((Dugdush and Harwig float into the ring. You still have your equipment. Roll for initiative, post actions, and yes, the blue goblin is still floating in there.))
